Replacement school building for Mickleover Primary School, Derby

Introduction

Graham Construction are preparing to submit a planning application on behalf of the Department for Education for the construction of a replacement school building with associated landscaping and access on the site of Mickleover Primary School, Vicarage Road, Mickleover, Derby, DE3 0EY.

Undertaking public consultation with local residents in advance of submitting a planning application is an important part of the process for the applicant. This consultation allows the local community to engage with the vision for the site and to provide valuable feedback on the proposals

We would like to hear your views on the proposed development before a planning application is submitted. We are holding a public consultation event in the main hall of Mickleover Primary School on Tuesday 24th March 2026 at 3:15-7pm (1515-1900) where plans of the proposed development will be on show and members of the design team will be available to answer any questions.

The site

The site lies between Vicarage Road and properties along Farneworth Road, Hope Avenue and Station Road.

As the building to be replaced is the southernmost, the site is defined by the allotments to the south, the existing hedgerow on the eastern boundary, the playing field to the north, and the hedgerow to the east. The existing access point from Vicarage Road will remain unaltered.

The Proposed Development

The existing buildings are at the end of their design life and are no longer fit for modern teaching. Internal accessibility, small rooms, lack of storage and inefficient heating are all problems felt by staff and students.

The proposal is therefore to demolish the southern block and erect a new linear block, with an extension to the car park and improvements to landscaping. The latter will create a more welcoming entrance environment, better integration between buildings, and additional play areas.

Internally, the project will provide new classrooms and group rooms, as well as a new assembly hall, activity studio, practical area, staff room and office space for the day-to-day running of the school. These will provide a significant improvement for both teachers and students, with the aim of creating an inspiring place to learn and offering a permanent replacement for the existing temporary teaching block.

There will be no change to the number of pupils or staff, and it will continue to be operated by existing management. Temporary accommodation will also be provided on site for pupils whilst the construction works take place.

A consultation event is being held in the main hall of Mickleover Primary School on Tuesday 24th March 2026 at 3:15-7pm (1515-1900), during which you will have the opportunity to view the proposals, meet the project team and ask any questions you may have regarding the Proposed Development and submit written feedback and comments.

Your comments will be recorded and any queries answered within the Statement of Community Involvement which will be submitted as part of the planning application submission pack to Derby City Council. A further opportunity to comment will be available through the Council’s Public Access system.
