INTRODUCTION
DPP Planning are preparing to submit a full planning application on behalf of Graham Construction and the Department for Education (DfE), for the construction of a replacement school with associated landscaping and access on the site of Ridgeway Infant School, Uplands Avenue, Littleover, Derby DE23 1GG.
Undertaking public consultation with local residents in advance of submitting the application is an important part of the process for the applicants and allows members of the public and the local community to engage with the vision for the site and to provide valuable feedback on the proposals.
The site and need for development
The site lies between St George’s Catholic Voluntary Academy and Gayton Junior School, all of which adjoin the rear of properties on Uplands Avenue and Ridgeway Avenue. The site is outlined in red in the adjacent image.
The Proposal
The existing buildings are at the end of their design life and are no longer fit for modern teaching. Internal steps, small rooms, lack of storage and inefficient heating are all challenges to staff and students.
The proposal involves the demolition of all existing building on the site and the erection of a single-storey replacement school with access retained from Uplands Avenue, alongside a new external play area with hard and soft landscaping to create a forest garden, trail garden and outdoor teaching spaces. There will be no change to pupil or staff numbers, and the school will continue to operate under the existing management.
As part of the redevelopment, new classrooms, a music and drama studio, assembly hall, library, kitchen and office space are to be provided, with significant improvements for the working and learning environment for staff and students respectively, creating an inspiring place to learn.
The landscaping strategy takes ideas from the heritage of the area, through the Ridgeway name and its Roman roots, integrating them into the learning environment so that pupils can create their own path of learning. Key features include the raised trail and the ‘little hill’, derived from the old name of Littleover – ‘little ufer’.
Providing your Feedback
We would like to hear your views on the proposed development before a planning application is submitted. We are holding a public consultation event on the 15th of December, at the main hall of the school, where plans of the proposed development will be on show and members of the design team will be available to answer any questions.
There will be an opportunity to provide your feedback at the event, or alternatively if you cannot make the event, please leave your comments on the feedback form on the website or post your comments to: DPP, One Park Row, Leeds, LS1 5HN. We kindly ask that all comments are submitted to us by the 7th of January 2026.
